Page CXVI / Hymns
Page CXVI is a project started with the idea of making Hymns accessible and known again. They are some of the richest, most meaningful, and moving pieces of music ever written.
The name comes from a reference to page 116 in our copy of The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis. It is a poignant passage where Aslan begins to sing Narnia into creation out of a black void.
It starts, “In the darkness something was happening at last. A voice had begun to sing. It was very far away and Digory found it hard to decide from what direction it was coming. Sometimes it seemed to come from all directions at once. Sometimes he almost thought it was coming out of the earth beneath them. Its lower notes were deep enough to be the voice of the earth herself. There were no words. There was hardly even a tune. But it was, beyond comparison, the most beautiful noise he had ever heard. It was so beautiful he could hardly bear it.”
~ C.S. Lewis

Page CXVI To Release Lullaby Hymns Album November 13, 2012
August 27, 2012
After recording four Hymns albums, collaborating and touring with Derek Webb, trio Page CXVI is releasing an album of restful, sleepy hymns titled simply, Lullabies. Consisting of band members Reid Phillips, Latifah Phillips and Dann Stockton, Page CXVI desires to make hymns known again and accessible to modern listeners. Lullabies offers a way for parents to share the rich language of the hymns with their children, and appeals musically to listeners of all ages.
“When my first niece was born almost three years ago it struck me that I wanted to make a record for her and her parents. Something they both could enjoy,” said Latifah Phillips. “The more we talked about making a Page CXVI lullaby record, we realized we needed to search for hymns that focused on rest, peace, and God as our provider. I still need to be reminded of these things daily as an adult, so why not start them young?”
When the individual members of the band realized that their friends and family members were not going to stop having babies (and that their fans throughout the country were not going to stop asking for Page CXVI onesies), they knew a record of lullaby hymns would be enjoyed by fans of all ages.
While working on Lullabies in the studio, Dann Stockton recalled a lullaby CD of slow, deep heartbeat sounds that his parents used to play to make him and his siblings sleepy: “My younger brother was the youngest, so it worked on him for the longest. He would hear the first track and you could see in his eyes that he was trying to fight sleep, but it was useless once that CD started.”
Page CXVI hopes Lullabies will become a beloved part of the rotation in every family’s collection of music for children, and stick with those children long after they’ve grown up.
Said Latifah Phillips: “Page CXVI Lullabies is my favorite record I have worked on thus far. It became a record that truly nurtured my heart and soul as I was gently reminded of the God of rest, peace, and provision through the lyrics. It has been healing for me and I hope it will encourage those who hear it!”
About Page CXVI:
After forming The Autumn Film, band members Reid and Latifah Phillips and Dann Stockton were leading worship at churches and could not deny the strong beckoning of the hymns. They decided to develop a parallel band; the same people with a new purpose of making hymns accessible again under the new name, Page CXVI. The somewhat cryptic name was intentional. It’s drawn from the page number in a particular copy of The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis, the brilliant passage where Aslan begins to sing Narnia into creation out of a black void.
